These are forms of the Romany verb to watch (originally rendered as varter), used especially in the 1950s and 1960s in the slang of the street market, fairground and theatre. The word was briefly exposed to a wider audience following its use by the camp characters Julian and Sandy in the Ken-neth Horne radio comedy shows of the 1960s.
